Nestled towards the south of Biswanath Chariali Town, Biswanath Ghat, popularly known as "Gupta Kashi," is a place of profound spiritual significance and natural beauty. The town is named after the ancient Biswanath Mandir and is often compared to Kashi during the golden rule of the Guptas. The ghat boasts a cluster of temples dedicated to various gods, with a prominent Shiva temple situated at the confluence of the Bridhaganga (Burigonga) river with the Brahmaputra. A unique phenomenon occurs here: during the rainy season, the Shiva linga of the erstwhile Biswanath temple submerges underwater, reappearing as the dry season approaches. This sacred linga is then covered by a temporary shed, allowing winter worship and drawing numerous tourists.Biswanath is also known by three other names: Ban-Baranashi, Ban-Kashi, and Ditiya-Kashi. Legend has it that King Baan secretly built this temple to surprise Lord Shiva, hence the name "Gupta Kashi," with "Gupta" meaning secret in Assamese. The temples of Lord Biswanath are located both in the middle of the river and on the banks, allowing for worship in both water and land.
