The State of Assam boasts numerous temples and monuments that reflect its rich historical and cultural past. One such significant site is the Mahamaya Dham, or Mahamaya Temple, located in Bogribari, about 30 km east of Dhubri town and 10 km west of Bilasipara town, within the Parbatjhora sub-division of Kokrajhar district. This temple is considered one of the greatest Shakti Peethas for Hindu pilgrims in Lower Assam, second only to the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. Dedicated to the goddess Mahamaya, meaning supreme illusion, the temple has a deep-rooted history dating back to the later part of 16th century. It is believed that the local communities of Parvatjowar, such as the Kacharies, Koches, and Naths, were the traditional worshippers of Mahamaya. The temple's origins are tied to a legend involving a wood merchant who encountered the goddess and conveyed her presence to the local Zamindar (landlord). Following divine visions and a search through dense jungles, the idol of Mahamaya was found, and a temple was constructed on the site.

Over the centuries, the temple underwent several reconstructions. The temple premises now feature idols of Goddess Kali and Lord Hanuman, attracting numerous pilgrims and tourists. The Mahamaya Temple is not just a religious site but also a cultural hub. Various festivals, such as Durga Puja, Kali Puja, and Shiva Ratri Pooja, are celebrated with great enthusiasm, drawing devotees from far and wide. The temple also hosts a significant fair during the Sankranti of the Chaitra month, lasting until the 6th of Bohag.

Another notable site associated with the Mahamaya goddess is the Mahamaya Snaanghat Temple, believed to be the place where the goddess used to bathe. Located a few kilometers from the main temple, it hosts an annual Shakti Yagya in January. The Mahamaya Temple has played a crucial role in shaping the social fabric of Assam, serving as a unifying force for people from diverse backgrounds. The temple's architecture, sculptures, and paintings showcase the artistic brilliance of the region, making it a repository of Assamese culture and heritage.
