Brigadier BS Gill, Vir Chakra, exemplifies how life should be lived, with love, large-heartedness, and a deep connection to the people. Brig Gill and his family have shared a close and tight-knit bond with the village of Diltlang in Mizoram for three generations. His father contributed to the area’s development as a civil contractor, and his son, Jagminder S Gill, served as a young army officer with the 1 Assam Rifles (Lushai Hills Battalion) in Mizoram. In a remarkable act of generosity, Brig Gill honored the memory of his late wife, Kamal Gill, by donating an ambulance and a multi-utility all-terrain vehicle to the village. This incredible gesture was not just about the donation but the journey he undertook to deliver it. Brig Gill traveled 3,500 km from Chandigarh to Aizawl, Mizoram, and then an additional 400 km to the village of Diltlang, located in the hills beyond Lunglei. This is the same village where he served as a post commander in 1972. The people of Diltlang warmly welcomed Brigadier Saheb, honoring him by carrying him through the village in a palanquin. This story of Brig BS Gill’s love for the people and his magnanimity, even during a time of great personal loss, is truly heartwarming and inspirational. It reminds us all of the power of compassion and the importance of giving back to the community.
May we all strive to live our lives with such grace and generosity.
