Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Centre announced the launch of a Rs 100 commemorative coin to mark the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika. The announcement, made through an official Gazette notification by the Union Ministry of Finance, has been welcomed across Assam and beyond as a befitting tribute to one of India’s most iconic cultural legends.
Sharing the notification on X, the Chief Minister described the decision as a “timeless recognition” for Dr Bhupen Hazarika. Sarma highlighted that the issuance of the commemorative coin reflects the nation’s deep respect for the maestro, whose songs and creations continue to resonate with generations.
Dr Bhupen Hazarika, often referred to as the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra,’ is celebrated not only in Assam but also across India and abroad for his timeless compositions, which beautifully blended Assamese folk traditions with universal human values. His music carried powerful messages of humanity, brotherhood, and social harmony, making him one of the greatest cultural icons of modern India. Awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2019, Hazarika’s legacy remains an integral part of India’s cultural and artistic heritage.
The decision to issue a Rs 100 commemorative coin on his birth centenary has been hailed as a historic step, symbolizing the recognition of his unmatched contribution to art, literature, and music. It also reflects the Centre’s continued efforts to honor personalities whose work has left a lasting impact on the country’s socio-cultural fabric.
As Assam and the rest of India prepare to celebrate the centenary of Dr Hazarika’s birth, the announcement of the coin adds another layer of reverence to the commemorations. For millions of his admirers, the coin will serve as more than just currency—it will be a cherished symbol of pride, memory, and respect for the legendary artist who gave voice to the dreams and struggles of common people through his songs.
