The sacred Nilachal Hill in Guwahati is all set to welcome lakhs of devotees as the renowned Ambubachi Mela at Maa Kamakhya Temple begins on June 22. Celebrated as a festival of Shakti and faith, this unique gathering honors the divine menstruation period of Goddess Kamakhya, embodying the sacred feminine power and fertility. Preparations are in full swing to ensure that the annual spiritual fair unfolds smoothly amid the rising footfall of pilgrims arriving from every corner of India. The main ritual known as ‘Pabriti’ will commence at precisely 2:56 PM on June 22, marking the closure of the temple doors to devotees for three days. This sacred pause symbolizes the goddess’s menstruation, a practice distinct to this ancient Shakti Peeth. The reopening ritual, ‘Nibriti’, on the morning of June 26 will draw countless pilgrims eager for the first glimpse of the deity after the ritual seclusion. To prioritize the safety and convenience of the devotees, the administration has implemented strict measures, especially given recent landslide risks triggered by heavy monsoon rains. Vehicles have been prohibited from reaching the temple peak, compelling pilgrims to trek up the hill on foot and return the same day, as night stays are not permitted this year. The temple will remain open from 5 AM to 6 PM daily, with emergency teams from NDRF and SDRF stationed strategically to manage any unexpected situations. Extensive security arrangements have been set in motion, with Guwahati Police deploying multiple checkpoints, surveillance, and crowd control teams to manage the massive influx of people. The Assam government has also ensured the provision of essential amenities such as clean drinking water, sanitation, medical facilities, and temporary shelters at the foothills to make the pilgrimage safer and more comfortable. Despite the challenges posed by nature, the spiritual magnetism of Ambubachi remains undiminished. For saints, tantriks, and ordinary devotees alike, this festival represents a profound connection with the primal force of creation and a reaffirmation of faith in the power of the goddess. Revered as the Mahakumbh of the East, Ambubachi Mela holds a unique place in India’s Tantric and Shakti worship traditions, celebrating the cycles of fertility and womanhood with rituals that defy conventional taboos around menstruation. As the rhythmic beats of dhaks echo through the Nilachal Hill and incense smoke fills the air, the unwavering devotion of pilgrims paints a vivid picture of enduring faith and spiritual resilience. The festival of Shakti at Kamakhya is more than just a ritual; it is a living testament to the timeless bond between the goddess and her countless children who brave every obstacle to stand in her divine presence.
